Probably, the first settlements in this corner of the Alburni mountains date back to around the year 1000, while the first manuscripts that testify to its existence, date back to 1174 and are kept in the archive of the monastery of the Cava Dei Tirreni Abbey and in the abbey of Montevergine. The parchments refer, respectively, to a contract stipulated between Ugone (lord of Petina) and the Monastery of the S. Trinità di Eboli for the rent of a mill, and to the donation of the monastery of S. Onofrio made by Ruggiero di Laviano (baron of Petina) to the Monastery of Montevergine. Even a papal bull of Celestine III mentions, in 1197, the village Massa di Petina. ... The Municipality of Petina, in the province of Salerno, is located within the "Cilento and Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park", at the foot of the Forloso and Pietralata mountains, on the ancient Via Annina.
Its medieval origin is clearly visible above all in the structure of its historic center and in the ruins of the "Convent of S. Onofrio.
