Travel Purpose: leisure
Positive: The views of the sea and the Estrel mountains are magnificent, and the property has direct private sea access with a rocky shore, just need to beware of the sea anemones (slimy red balls) in the crevices. The apartment has been newly renovated, so the interior is new and shiny, also very clean. You do have to watch out for flimsy things though: it feels like the renovations were done by two different contractors, of which one did a solid job, whereas the other was drunk, lazy or both - random things like door handles, shower cabin gaskets, door hinges or such may not be as well-built and as fully attached as you expect them to be. The kitchen was well kitted out - we didn't lack anything for our cooking needs, and the fridge was large enough that we could store enough food to compensate for the rather long distance (14 km) to the nearest supermarket, even despite being 3 people. There are multiple mountain hiking trail entrances in the vicinity of the property, so it's the right place for activities in the mountains too, but watch out for the forest fires season - the access to the trails is closed regularly, and there are fines for ignoring the closures. Also, there are some really nice places for a scenic walk on volcanic rock along the sea shore. The host was quite nice, we were allowed to access the property and pick up the keys from a lockbox after advertised check-in hours when we had a severe delay in our arrival due to an issue with a rental car; also, when we had a problem with the apartment door, she was easy to reach and helpful, sending someone to fix the issue the very next working day.
Negative: The property desperately needs mosquito nets - as soon as the sun begins to set, you basically NEED to close all the windows, because if you don't - you'll regret it during the night. The problem is made worse by the fact that the apartment lacks proper ventilation - the air conditioning is not HVAC, so there is no air exchange with closed windows. This means, that the apartment can only be safely ventilated during the day, which, of course, isn't an option if you plan some daytime activities and only return to the apartment in the evening - and choosing between being harassed by a horde of mosquitoes and breathing stale air is not a fun choice - even less so, considering you could instead sleep with fresh air and smell of pine trees coming from the mountains, while also saving on air conditioning, if only there were mosquito nets on the windows. And that's even before mentioning that Southern France is Dengue fever risk zone. Also, don't get deceived by the vicinity of the train station - while it is just 1 km away, that 1 km is along a winding mountain road with poor visibility and no sidewalks, just a cliff on one side and a cliffside on the other - so don't count on it unless you're fine playing chicken with oncoming car traffic without any room to jump away. The parking lot is uncovered, and on a steep hill - think twice before arriving with a car without hill assist, and take some care to protect the car interior from heat and sunlight. During our visit, the residence complex appeared to have had ongoing renovation works for neighbouring apartments, so there was some construction noise during working hours on weekdays - probably not a problem unless one is spending the entire vacation in the apartment.
Summary: Great holiday apartment, would be 10/10 with mosquito nets and a sidewalk to the train station
